No matter what level you’re at with your golf game, an understanding of basic etiquette if essential. You don’t want to be that person no one wants to play with because you’re just always in the wrong place at the wrong time. To help with some of that basic etiquette, we passed along a question from a reader to a PGA Tour caddie in our stable asking where a golfer should stand when a player is swinging.

Where should golfers stand when a player is swinging?

If you’re looking for the best spot to be when someone else is playing a shot, here’s what you need to know: First of all, never stand directly behind the player. You want to be completely our of their line of sight and you can’t achieve that if you’re behind them. The best place to be is even with the person swinging and — at the very least — approximately 6 feet away.

That number probably applies more so on tee boxes where things can get tight — especially for us in the first two rounds of a tournament when you have three players and three caddies on the tee box. Outside of the tee box — unless you’re the caddie and 6 feet away — you don’t even want the player swinging to know you’re there.

“Social distancing” is a phrase we’re all familiar with these days. Apply that logic to where you stand when someone is swinging a golf club.
