As if the partisan American crowd didn’t have enough to cheer about Saturday at the Ryder Cup, U.S. rookie Scottie Scheffler gave them a jolt of electricity on the 15th green when he made an 18-footer to take the 1-up lead in a close match.

Scheffler yelled to the crowd and his teammate Bryson DeChambeau when it dropped and chest bumped animatedly with DeChambeau in celebration.

Both player’s caddies also felt the rush of emotions as the crowd erupted on that green alongside Lake Michigan.

“It was an unbelievable moment,” Scheffler’s caddie Scott Mcguinness said. “It was such a clutch putt by my man. It felt like we were in a football stadium walking to the next tee.”

That’s the kind of feelings the Ryder Cup can bring to players and caddies.

For DeChambeau’s caddie Brian Zeigler, the moment brought a rush of energy as well.

“That was way cool,” Zeigler said, “what a moment to be a part of.”

Scheffler celebrated excitedly with the caddies as well as they walked off the 15th.

The birdie took the match from tied to a 1-up American lead. DeChambeau and Scheffler went on to win the 16th, then DeChambeau had some heroics on the 218-yard, par-3 17th. Two up with 2 to play, he laced a shot in tight to about seven feet, igniting the partisan crowd once again.

Before the tee shot, Zeigler gave DeChambeau a challenge to get him fired up, and the 28-year-old responded.

“I told Bryson I wasn’t going to caddie the 18th and he needed to end it before he hit the shot on 17,” Zeigler said. “He hit a perfect cut 8 iron tight.”

Yes, an 8 iron from 218 yards under pressure late in the afternoon. Anyone else got that shot? Unbelievable.

Zeigler was hoping for even more dramatics on that green.

“I was hoping Viktor made his putt (25 feet on the fringe) so we had to make ours to win the match,” Zeigler said. “We would have lit that stadium up in there.”

As it was, Hovland missed and DeChambeau won his first match in a Ryder Cup or Presidents Cup 3 & 1 with Scheffler.

The caddies said that celebrating that final match of the day with the assembled team along with assistant captains, Captain Stricker, and the families was an awesome feeling.

And how could it not be? When you have Phil Mickelson, Fred Couples and so many stars who you’ve watched for years ready to congratulate you for your efforts?

“It’s a great feeling” Mcguinness said, “especially knowing that we got an important point for the team in that moment.”

Zeigler was loving every minute of the win as well and the aftermath. He’s trying to soak it all in as best he can.

“I’m just enjoying the moment,” Zeigler said.

For his sixth event caddying for Bryson, what a moment and stage to be able to soak in.
