Frank Remmes embraces being a ‘once-a-year’ caddie at his sixth PGA Championship in nine years

Each year, the PGA Championship includes 20 PGA of America “club pro” qualifiers in the tournament field. For ex-insurance account executive Frank Remmes, it’s his chance to walk the course with the best golfers in the world.
“Everybody is so friendly to us,” Remmes said. “We played with Russell Henley on Wednesday and he remembered our name from being paired a few years ago. After that, we played the end of our practice round with Tony Finau and Jon Rahm. That’s pretty cool.”
Remmes has caddied six of the last nine PGA Championships for club pros, including the past four with Danny Balin. He embraces being a ‘once-a-year’ caddie and his opportunity to be inside the ropes at one of golf’s four majors.

“I grew up caddying at a club,” Remmes said. “I’ve done it for a long time, but I like that I only caddie once a year. I don’t think I could do it full time anymore.”
Remmes first met Balin at a practice round of the PGA Championship in 2013 and later crossed paths at the PGA Tour Qualifying School. Over the years, they have developed a great relationship both on and off the course.
“Danny treats me well when I caddie for him,” Remmes said. “We have a lot of fun. There are eight of us in the house here at Kiawah. We’re all like family.”
Remmes spends his retired life playing golf with his 15-year-old son in Atlanta. This week, he has his son alongside him for the first time.
“It’s a fun way to get my kid involved to show him the other side of golf, being with the best players in the world. It’s like your kid being a bank-teller and bringing him up to the CEO’s office,” Remmes said.
His first time caddying the PGA Championship was in 2013 with Mark Brown at Oak Hill Country Club. He was also on the bag for Brown when he qualified in 2016.
In his five appearances at the PGA, Remmes has yet to advance to the weekend with Brown or Balin.
“It’s tough for a club pro to make the cut,” Remmes said. “They have the ability, they’re just not used to all the distractions of a major. The Club Pro Championship three weeks ago was totally different. We were in our own little cocoon. This week it’s the opposite.”
Balin and Remmes tee off at Kiawah’s Ocean Course Thursday at 12:25 p.m. and Friday at 7 a.m.
