You may have noticed that Phil Mickelson has been using the services of a new caddie these last two week’s for both The American Express and the Farmers Insurance Open.

That new caddie? Mickelson’s swing coach, Andrew Getson.

But fear not; the move is temporary. Mickelson’s brother, Tim, isn’t being replaced. Instead, he’s out for good reason as he and wife, Maranda, welcomed their first child to the world on January 26, a baby boy they named Asher Hayes Mickelson.

Phil Mickelson explained Tim’s absence at The American Express last week.

“Today is January 20 and it’s their due date for their baby boy,” he said. “With Palm Springs being a two-hour drive away, and the inability to join your wife if you’re not with her when you go into the hospital at birth, he has to be there with her.

“I just know that the birth of any children, especially your first, is the most emotional experience that you could possibly share, and there’s no sense to take any risk. He’s at home with his wife; they’re due any minute, any day, and I’m excited for them.”

Phil Mickelson famously wore a pager in the 1999 U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2, prepared to leave at a moment’s notice for the birth of his first child, Amanda. Though he was ready to leave, Mickelson did finish the tournament, where he was runner up to Payne Stewart… on Father’s Day.

The very next day, Amanda was born and her father made it in time.

Getson, who has worked with Phil Mickelson just over five years, also filled in at the 2020 Genesis Invitational.
