Sights and sounds from Bethpage Black

As expected, the famous “warning” sign at Bethpage Black got plenty of attention during PGA Championship week. Photo: Scott Halleran

Don’t let the calendar fool you folks: last week was a major week as the PGA Championship rolled through Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, N.Y. Brooks Koepka was the wire-to-wire winner in what turned out to be a bit of a snooze-fest, but our favorite caddies still added to the championship experience with solid work on social media.

Life on the road can be tough for our caddie friends, especially considering the shoddy hotel and otherwise sketchy accommodations you may run into in unfamiliar territory. Luckily, this was not the case for caddie Aaron Flener as his man, J.T. Poston, routinely spoils him when on the road.

Whether it be updating yardage books, mapping out greens or studying pin positions, all the caddies last week brought their A-game to help their players at the first May major in quite awhile.

One unique aspect of this year’s event was the inclusion of John Daly on a golf cart, which sounds more like a carnival attraction than anything else. This presented a special challenge for his caddie, Peter Van Der Reit, who did his best to keep up throughout the week.

In case you missed the 1,000,000 social posts of a certain warning sign, Bethpage Black is an extremely difficult course. Numerous big names missed the cut, which allowed players and caddies to find other ways to spend their weekend. See? Always look on the bright side folks!
