How to ‘stop being crazy’ and listen to your caddie

The conversations between players and their caddies will never stop being interesting, and the ability for networks to pick up these exchanges on their microphones enhances the viewer experience. I mentioned one such example in last week’s post featuring Justin Rose and Mark Fulcher, which resulted in Rose holing out for eagle.

Another back-and-forth was captured during last week’s Nedbank Golf Challenge between golfer Ashun Wu and his caddie. Faced with the option of playing out to the fairway from the trees or attempting a high-risk shot at the par-4 18th green, Wu’s caddie held nothing back when trying to convince his man to be smart.

Or, to put it more accurately, to “stop being crazy.”

For those keeping track, that was a full minute of Wu’s caddie all but begging him to play it safe, especially since Wu was six shots back from leader Sergio Garcia at the time. After all, even if Wu pulled off the miracle shot and made birdie, it wasn’t as if he’d win the golf tournament… or even tie the lead. The risks definitely outweighed the reward in this instance.

The result? Wu took the advice of his partner and punched out.

Wu ended the round by recording a bogey on the hole, which could have been much worse had he taken the more risky option. Kudos to this team for playing it safe. Wu finished the tournament tied for 16th on Sunday. Who knows if he would have even made the cut with out his caddie’s stern talking to?

In other news, it appears this Tuesday at Sea Island Resort will be a popular place among Tour caddies as a caddie-only putting tournament will take place benefitting the Western Golf Association. The event will be held on the resort’s new Driftwood putting course, and Davis Love III’s charity has agreed to put some hard cash on the line.

Oh… and they’ll be tapping a keg. So there’s that.
